CARLTON R. MARCYAN

Of Counsel

With an excess of forty years of experience litigating, negotiating, and advocating for his clients in highly contentious matters with much at stake, Mr. Marcyan has seen and done it all with great compassion for his clients and determination to achieve excellent results.

Mr. Marcyan began his career working for the tax and accounting firm now known as PricewaterhouseCoopers, a “Big Four” accounting firm as an auditor and tax specialist. In 1983, Mr. Marcyan was on the ground floor of what was then a new matrimonial firm in Chicago, Schiller DuCanto & Fleck, LLP, where he began as an associate attorney, and was later elevated to income partner, to equity partner, and then to the firm’s executive committee chair and managing partner. Mr. Marcyan was instrumental in expanding the firm, and during his tenure it was then the largest law firm in the country specializing exclusively in the area of matrimonial law.

Mr. Marcyan is well known throughout the state and nationally for his experience and skill in matrimonial law, tax matters, and proficiency in all conflict resolution methods including trials, mediation, and the collaborative process. Constantly learning to improve his skills and be in the vanguard of trends to better represent his clients, he earned not only a law degree and Certified Public Accountant certificate, but a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and Master of Arts Degree in Conflict Resolution. Mr. Marcyan is also a Certified Financial Planner®. A significant facet of his practice is as a mediator under Marcyan Mediation, a division of Jackson Buckley & Pfanenstiel, LLP, where he draws on his depth of experience to assist parties and counsel to resolve their disputes.

Practicing matrimonial law at the highest level is not an easy career and requires skill, knowledge and understanding of the law, as well as the employment of financial acumen. As a frequent lecturer before various international, national, state, and local bar associations, Mr. Marcyan is eager to share his unique experience with other lawyers and professionals. An effective attorney must also have the tenacity to advocate for the client while at the same time possessing the necessary communication skills and emotional intelligence to best deal with the judiciary and opposing counsel. Mr. Marcyan uses his range of skills in this regard to achieve superior results for his clients.

Mr. Marcyan served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1973 until 1975, and in his free time scuba dives and rides his motorcycle at various locations around the world. As part of his commitment to the community he serves as a trustee of the Marine Military Academy in Texas and an active member of the Rotary Club Lake Forest-Lake Bluff where he is a former president. Currently, Mr. Marcyan is a Judge Advocate for the Lake Forest American Legion McKinlock Post 264.

Mr. Marcyan is frequently recognized for his service to his clients and community. He has been listed in Best Lawyers of America since 2005, named a Leading Lawyer by the Law Bulletin Publishing Company since its inception two decades ago, selected a Illinois Super Lawyer for every year beginning from 2005 onward, was named one of the Top 100 of all lawyers in Illinois by Super Lawyers (2017) and honored by US News & World Report Best Lawyers in America as the 2012 Chicago Family Law "Lawyer of the Year" and the 2020, 2018, 2014 and 2011 Chicago Collaborative Law "Lawyer of the Year."
